Educational Media-Library Media M.Ed. (Online)
The Master of Education in Educational Media leads to certification in Library Media. The graduate program is designed to prepare students to plan, design and administer library/media centers and qualify students to serve as School Library Media Specialists in a P-12 educational setting. This program is offered completely online.
School Library Media Specialist Certification Options
Satisfactory progress in the program will be predicated on a combination of factors such as academic success, demonstration of competence in requisite skills, adherence to ethical standards, appropriate interpersonal functioning. Successful completion of this program may qualify the candidate for Class “A” Professional Educator Certification in Library Media Specialist provided that they already hold Class “B” Professional Educator Certification in a teaching field.
Students entering this program must have valid Baccalaureate-level or Master’s degree level professional educator certification in a teaching field.
This program can be completed with as few as 21 semester hours. Required courses are dependent upon whether courses taken in previous master's programs are able to satisfy program requirements. Program faculty, in consultation with the college certification officers, will determine which specific courses meet requirements for recommendation to add state certification for library media. To be eligible for this program, students must have a Master’s degree and valid Alabama Class “A”
Program Requirements
- Completing the Educational Media Core (21 semester hours) with a minimum grade of “B” in all core courses and a satisfactory performance in each of the three Internship experiences.
- Passing a written Comprehensive and Portfolio Examination
- Passing the PRAXIS II test for Library Media Specialists
- Having at least two years of successful teaching experience at the time of application for admission.
Application Deadlines
Applications for the Educational Media program are reviewed throughout the year. Application submission deadlines:
- Fall admission – August 17
- Spring admission – January 7
- Summer admission – May 31
The final admission decision involves evaluation of the following: grade-point average, GRE scores, Letters of Recommendation, applicant’s statement of career goal(s) and purpose(s), professional experience, and program enrollment availability.
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
*USA students applying to a USA graduate program in the College of Education and Professional Studies should complete a transcript request form (PDF) found on the University Registrar's Office website.
In the Name/Organization field for the transcript recipient write, "USA Graduate School". There is no charge associated with this request. This option applies only to USA transcripts for students applying to USA graduate programs. - GPA Requirement: A minimum overall grade-point-average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale based on the GPA
used as the basis for granting the degree and posted on the official transcript from
a regionally accredited institution at the time the degree was earned OR a 2.5 GPA on the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate course work posted on the
official transcript from a regionally accredited institution at the time the degree
was earned.
GPA Exception: Individuals who have earned a bachelor 's degree from a regionally accredited institution at the time the degree was earned and who do not have a qualifying GPA for admission may seek admission based on a qualifying score of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). For the GRE, this standard is defined as having a score at the 50th percentile on all of the following subtests: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. For the Miller Analogies Test, students must have a score at or above the 50th percentile based on the total group percentile rank score. For Alternative Class A programs, applicants must submit a qualifying alternate score on the Alabama-prescribed Praxis subject-area test. - A valid bachelor’s-level (Class B) or valid (Class A) master’s-level professional
educator certificate in a teaching field or a valid master’s-level professional educator
certificate in another area of instructional support.
- A two (2) page, double-spaced narrative from the applicant indicating the applicant’s
goal(s) and purpose(s) for pursuing the field of Educational Media.
- Resume or CV (uploaded within application).
- A minimum of two years full-time teaching experience. Must be documented on Supplemental Experience Form (PDF) requested from Human Resources in your past/present employing school system.
